From lab bench to AI platform: how one founder's frustration with slow experimentation became a faster path to chemical breakthroughs.
Sunthetics' founder, Daniela Blanco, trained as a chemical engineer in Venezuela and assumed she'd spend her career in the oil industry - the major driver in the Venezuelan economy. However, that quickly changed when she realized she wanted to work on more sustainable initiatives, so she left to get her PhD in Chemical Engineering at New York University (NYU), where her research focused on a highly polluting industrial process, nylon production, redesigning it to run on renewable energy instead. That idea, a solar-powered approach to chemistry, gave Sunthetics its name, and after it won the Entrepreneurs Challenge at NYU, the company was incorporated in 2018.
That same research gave her more than a cleaner way to make nylon; it provided a turning point for the company. Daniela herself ran experiments for 3 and a half years in the lab to optimize the nylon production process steps and turn them into more sustainable alternatives. Daniela knew there had to be a better way. On a hunch, she trained a neural network on her experimental data, followed what it told her to try next, and got better results in two weeks than she'd managed in years. That's when she realized that chemistry was never the bottleneck in innovation: the real constraint was the number of experiments it took to get anywhere. Intuition and trial-and-error approaches were the rate-determining steps for R&D. Daniela realized that a data-driven tool for AI-driven experimentation, designed with versatility in mind, could work for any chemist and chemical process, so Sunthetics went from a solar-powered chemistry venture into an easy-to-use AI platform designed to help chemists shorten development timelines and get results faster.
Today, as an AI-optimization platform for chemical R&D, we help any chemist figure out what to test next and whether a path is worth pursuing on fewer experiments and limited data. Our platform is used by some of the largest companies in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and materials, as well as academic labs.
Fewer experiments mean less time, less waste, and less cost to reach an answer, which is why our mission is to make chemistry more efficient, and more sustainable as a result.
Sunthetics was founded and built by PhD-trained chemical engineers and machine learning researchers who understand the complexity of pharmaceutical and specialty chemical R&D firsthand.
